It’s so important to start off the school year with building relationships and creating a positive classroom culture. One way I do that is by teaching my students the meaning of Marigolds. This idea came to me when I read Jennifer Gonzalez’ blog post about teachers finding their marigolds, and I thought it would be perfect to teach my students how to find theirs.
You can read more about the lesson on my blog.
In addition to reading, writing, and partner talk, I also had my students make these paper marigold flowers. The flowers made an amazing display in my classroom.
After you teach the marigold lesson, follow these steps to make the flowers with your class.
Supplies for making the Marigold Craft:
Step 1: Print 10 marigold circles for each student. You can also have students work in pairs.
Step 2: Cut out each circle and fold the four times.
Step 3: After folding the circles, use a pencil to draw a scalloped edge on the folded circle.
Step 4:Cut each scalloped edge.
Step 5: Open each of the folded circles and trim on each of the folds as you unfold each part.
Step 6: Keep one of the circles open and fold the rest of the circles back up. Make sure to fluff up the tips of the paper
Step 7: Use liquid glue to glue on each of the folded circles back to the one circle that was left unfolded.
Step 8: Keep gluing each of the pieces until you have a full marigold. Fluff up the finished piece!
